Unita delivered SWOP’s largest and most ambitious store to date, transforming a former axe-throwing venue and CrossFit gym into an expansive retail environment that celebrates rather than conceals the building’s existing character.

Designed by William McRoberts and Joseph Gardner of Studio Gardner, the 455m² fitout takes a restrained approach to adaptive reuse. In this location, carefully considered interventions allow the original structure, steel windows and natural light to become part of the customer experience.

A perforated aluminium mesh wall provides subtle separation between front and back of house while retaining the openness of the space, with careful coordination of services and concealed fixings maintaining the simplicity of the design.

This retail fitout is now a space people feel inspired to engage with and explore. Delivered on time and on budget, the result gives an existing building new purpose while creating a distinctive home for SWOP’s fourth national store.

I loved working with Unita. Everyone was incredibly helpful, friendly, accommodating and respectful, which made the process easy and enjoyable. Any challenge we faced was always met with a solution and that approach makes me want to continue working with Unita in the future.
