AI: Death of the Designer?

It can write speeches, it can give answers to exam questions, so it’s no surprise that Artificial Intelligence can generate interior design plans. As technology continues to advance, AI programs like Midjourney are making it easier than ever for people to create their dream interior designs with just a few prompts and the click of a button. While the development of AI technology is awesome (and maybe a bit terrifying), does the rise of Midjourney and other AI programs put the future of interior designers in jeopardy?

It’s undeniable that AI-generated designs have their advantages. They are often a more cost effective and faster alternative to traditional design methods, and can produce incredible visuals that the manual design process may not be able to achieve as easily. However, the question that often follows the topic of AI-generated designs is: can these designs be applied to real-life spaces, where people actually live, work, and play? Sure, a spiral staircase in the middle of the home may look great on a digital screen, but how practical is it, really?

Insanely inspiring? Absolutely. But can it be built in the real world?

This is where the importance of human touch comes in. A skilled interior designer can take a range of factors into account that are impossible for an AI program to completely understand. Interior designers can consider the needs of the people who will be using the space, taking into account their age, lifestyle, children and pets. Having knowledge of these factors gives interior designers the means to create a design that is both visually pleasing and practical, where AI can struggle to do both at once.

At Unita, we believe that the final product of any project should be the result of collaboration between the client, the architect, and the builder. While AI-generated designs can be a great starting point, the human element of interior design is what makes spaces liveable. So let our team of experts design and construct the beautiful joinery and custom pieces that make a space uniquely yours, and leave the AI to writing your email pitch.
