Designer Spotlight — Studio Goss

In our fourth Designer Spotlight interview, we spoke to David Goss, Director at Studio Goss. After years of experience working with acclaimed architecture firms, David decided it was time to take on the interior design world as his own entity. Continue reading to learn more about David’s impeccable career, his most rewarding project, and what is next for his incredible studio.

U. How did you get into design?

D. I’d initially enrolled in painting at VCA and made a last-minute change to Industrial Design. That eventually lead to Architecture!

U. You have a diverse portfolio of commercial and residential projects, what are your favourite aspects of working in each and which do you prefer?

D. I love the speed of the commercial projects as they tend to roll out more quickly. That said there is something really rewarding about residential work and working closely with a client to create a space that makes them happy. I don’t know if I can say one or the other, but I do love having a balance of both residential and commercial.

Roseneath Street – Melbourne, VIC

U. What is your favourite commercial project you’ve done to date?

D. The Armadillo Fitzroy project has been really rewarding. It’s close to home (literally) and the before and after was quite extreme!

U. What is your design process, and does it change much depending on the project?

D. The design process varies from project to project but we tend to work a lot in 3D and although we utilise computer there is still a lot of hand sketching!

U. How would you describe your design style?

D. Calm, Effortless, Concise.

Armadillo – Fitzroy, VIC

U. What are your tips for collaborating with clients to create the best possible space?

D. Ask lots of questions!

U. What do you love most about design?

D. The teamwork and that each job is different.

U. What advice would you give to someone entering the interior design business?

D. Travel as much as you can.

U. What are your upcoming trends predictions?

D. Gloss paint finishes.

Huntingtower Road – Armadale, VIC

Quick Fire Questions:

U. Working digitally or on paper?

D. Paper

U. Early bird or night owl?

D. Night Owl for sure!

U. Favourite project?

D. Roseneath Street.

U. Guilty pleasure?

D. Watching music film-clips on YouTube.

U. Best and worst interior design trends?

D. I’m enjoying that vintage original furniture is having a moment / Hating the proliferation of low-quality knock- off furniture that ends up in landfill.

U. You’re hosting your dream dinner party, who are your three guests?

D. Roisin Murphy, Miley Cyrus & Dolly Parton!…  Would be hilarious!

U. What’s next for Studio Goss?

D. We have 3 projects on the go in the US so maybe more international work!
